Black & White Kitchen Ideas

Black and white kitchens offer timeless elegance and versatility. Despite their classic appeal, they can be customised to suit various styles, from sleek modern to classic mid-century. These kitchens are easy to update with new fixtures and on-trend pops of colour, making them a solid choice for design longevity.
SHOULD YOU DESIGN A BLACK KITCHEN WITH WHITE APPLIANCES OR A WHITE KITCHEN WITH BLACK APPLIANCES?
Deciding whether you want to have a black kitchen with white appliances or a white kitchen with black appliances really comes down to your personal preferences, the design of your home and the look you’re trying to achieve.
White cabinetry and major appliances can be a great option for smaller kitchens. Making them look brighter and larger, this simple base can be easily dressed up with the addition of black appliances and fixtures. Black kitchens, on the other hand, are typically quite sleek, sophisticated and moody in appearance. When designed with form and function in mind, they can look much more expensive than they actually are, but may look out of place in some homes.
While experimenting with colour can be fun, classic black and white appliances offer an easy way to elevate your kitchen design. Whether you choose an exclusively monochrome palette or decide to let your splashbacks and benchtops do the talking, black and white kitchen appliances are well worth considering if you’re designing a new kitchen or looking to update your existing cooking space.
BLACK APPLIANCES
BLACK FRIDGES
A staple of every kitchen, fridges are one appliance that can certainly make a statement. Available in a variety of sizes and finishes, from matte black to gloss, you’ll find that there’s a black fridge out there to compliment just about every kitchen design. For households with plenty of mouths to feed, the Hitachi Black Glass Finish French Door Fridge blends practicality with style, with its sleek glass finish bringing a modern touch to this high capacity model. For a serious statement piece, there’s no overlooking the vintage styling of the Smeg 50’s Retro Style Fridge, while the LG Bottom Mount Fridge is an elevated version of a kitchen classic.
BLACK OVENS AND FREESTANDING COOKTOPS
Just like modern fridges, ovens and freestanding cooktops are now available in a variety of finishes, from sleek black glass to versatile matte black stainless steel. Great to coordinate or contrast with your other appliances, you’ll find a mix of pure black appliances and those accented with touches of silver. If you’re all about minimalism, the Bosch 60cm Built-in Oven perfectly blends form with function, while the design of the Omega 60cm Electric Oven incorporates versatile stainless steel. A design feature in their own right, freestanding cooktops are also available in black, with models such as the Smeg 90cm Dual Fuel Freestanding Cooker showcasing just how good black appliances can look.
BLACK RANGEHOODS
Despite being an incredibly functional appliance, there’s no reason why rangehoods can’t coordinate with the rest of your kitchen décor. Forget the clunky, boring rangehoods of the past and elevate your kitchen design with a black rangehood. Perfect for complimenting other black appliances or contrasting against a fresh white splashback, canopy rangehoods, such as the Sirius 90cm Black Canopy Rangehood, can be a real feature in your kitchen.
BLACK DISHWASHERS
Another functional kitchen appliance, dishwashers tend to take up quite a large portion of your kitchen’s real estate. Without the right colour or finish, they can look out of place and disrupt an otherwise cohesive design. With monochromatic, black glass and black stainless steel models on the market, there’s no longer a need to compromise on either form or function. Continue a black stainless steel theme throughout your kitchen with the Bosch Series | 6 60cm Built-Under Dishwasher, or make the most of the Haier Freestanding Dishwasher’s with features designed to make life easier.
BLACK BENCHTOP APPLIANCES
While the big ticket appliances, such as fridges, ovens and dishwashers, may be the main focus of many kitchen designs, benchtop appliances, including kettles, toasters and coffee machines not only add the perfect finishing touch to kitchen styling, but can also help to flow the colour theme throughout the space. With a great selection of black appliances to choose from, including the Smeg Retro Style Aesthetic Electric Kettle, the Sunbeam Alinea Collection 4 Slice Toaster and the Breville The Barista Express Impress, it’s easy to find items that perfectly complement your design direction.
WHITE APPLIANCES
WHITE FRIDGES
One of the most common fridge colours on the market, white fridges are a classic for good reason. Available in a great range of configurations, from standard top and bottom mounts to French door layouts and pigeon pairs, there’s a model out there to suit just about any space. Looking great against a variety of colours, including black, they work well in monochrome kitchens, as well as alongside other tones. If you’re looking for a white fridge that’s perhaps a little fancier than a standard model, you might also want to consider a white glass finish, like that found on the Hitachi 403L Top Mount Inverter Fridge.
WHITE OVENS AND FREESTANDING COOKTOPS
Although not quite as popular as white fridges, white ovens and freestanding cooktops are great options when designing a minimalist kitchen. Helping to continue the colour story of your cabinetry to create a cohesive design, some models are also available with stainless steel accents. Keep things simple with an all white Chef 60cm Fan Forced Oven or incorporate a touch of stainless steel with the Westinghouse Multifunction Oven.
WHITE RANGEHOODS
While they may not be the most glamorous of appliances, rangehoods are another piece of the design puzzle that needs to be addressed when creating your dream kitchen. Despite being first and foremost a functional appliance, finding a white rangehood to match your kitchen can help to tie the design together. Keep things clean and minimalistic with a white slide out rangehood from Omega or choose to make a real statement with a Fisher & Paykel Pyramid Chimney Wall Rangehood.
WHITE DISHWASHERS
Much like white fridges, white dishwashers are another classic of the appliance world. Available at a variety of different price points, it’s easy to find one that not only matches your style direction, but also your budget. If you’re searching for a great basic model, the Westinghouse 60cm White Freestanding Dishwasher might be an option for you, while the Bosch Serie | 8 60cm Fully-integrated Dishwasher blends seamlessly into your cabinetry.
WHITE BENCHTOP APPLIANCES
The perfect contrast against black cabinetry or a black splashback, white benchtop appliances are not only practical additions to a kitchen, but can also be incorporated into your styling of the space. You’ll find plenty of great white toasters, white kettles and other white benchtop appliances to choose from, allowing you to find something that aligns with your design aesthetic. If you’re thinking of going with a mid-century inspired design, a white Smeg Retro Style Aesthetic Electric Kettle might be right up your alley, while a simple Sunbeam Alinea 4 Slice Toaster provides a great balance between design and function.
CHOOSING YOUR BLACK AND WHITE KITCHEN DECOR
Before you start selecting your appliances, it can be a good idea to finalise your kitchen décor. From the benchtops and paint colour to the tiles you choose for your splashback, each of these elements can play a part in helping you determine how you’ll balance your mix of black and white appliances.
Some elements of kitchen décor you may consider customising may include:
Paint colour
Tile colour
Cabinetry colour
Cabinet handle colour
Floor tile colour
Benchtop colour
Sink and tap colour
If your kitchen is set to be predominantly black, white accents may help to add some visual interest. On the other hand, a white kitchen may benefit from the added depth that black appliances can provide.
Another important factor to consider is the existing décor in adjoining rooms. If you currently have a white dining table and chair set, it may look out of place next to a monochromatic black kitchen, while dark carpets or floorboards may seem jarring next to a light, airy kitchen. If your kitchen is separate from other areas of your home, this may not be quite as important of a consideration than if you have an open plan living space.
To keep things interesting, you may also want to play around with
Texture
Colour, wood or stainless steel accents
Colour blocking
WHAT SIZE FRIDGE DO YOU NEED?
When purchasing a new fridge, there are a few key considerations that will help you determine which model is right for your needs. They include the size of your kitchen, the capacity that you require and your intended use of the appliance.
KITCHEN SIZE
Before you start looking at all the different fridge models available, it’s important to take the time to find out exactly how much room you have to work with. Pull out a tape measure and measure the height, width and depth of the space your fridge will sit in. You’ll need to leave some space either side of the fridge (approximately 5cm on each side) to allow heat to vent efficiently from the motor, as well as enough space to open each door, so be sure to take that into account too. While you have your tape measure handy, don’t forget to measure the doors of your house or apartment to ensure you’ll actually be able to get your new fridge into your kitchen.
CAPACITY
The volume of internal storage space within a fridge, otherwise known as its capacity, is measured in litres, with the amount required varying from household to household. If you live alone or with one other person, you’ll more than likely need a fridge with a smaller capacity than a family of five. As a general rule of thumb, you’ll need around 100 to 150 litres per person.
| Household Size | Recommended Capacity |
| 1 to 2 people | 200 to 380 litres |
| 3 to 4 people | 350 to 530 litres |
| 5 or more people | 440 litres and up |
USE
Another important factor to consider when shopping for a new fridge is how you plan to use your appliance. If you are looking for a fridge to keep just a few odds and ends cool, a smaller model may be better suited to your needs, while a larger fridge might be more practical if you love to entertain. If you like to prepare your meals in bulk and freeze them, you may want to look at fridge freezers with larger freezer compartments, but if you find yourself eating out more often than not, a smaller capacity fridge may be a better option.
FEATURES TO LOOK OUT FOR
Door hinges: When buying a new fridge, it’s important to take note of which way the doors open. Some models are left-hinged, meaning that they only open from the right-hand side, while others are right-hinged and will open from the left-hand side only. While most fridges have fixed hinges, some have reversible doors that can be hinged on either side.
Temperature controls: Look for fridge freezer models with separate temperature controls for both the main compartment and the freezer section. Being able to adjust the temperature of each compartment independently gives you greater control over the fridge’s settings, allowing you to tailor them to your needs. Some newer fridge models also have inbuilt humidity and temperature sensors that automatically adjust settings when needed.
Adjustable shelving: From time to time, our fridge storage needs change, meaning that it’s important to have flexibility when it comes to internal fridge storage. Look for models with shelving that can be easily adjusted or removed, allowing you to store bulky goods, such as large cuts of meat, when needed. While considering your storage options, it’s also a good idea to look for shelving that’s easy to clean, helping to make maintenance a breeze.
Lighting: Although it’s something that may not be at the top of your fridge feature wishlist, internal lighting is important for helping you find the items you need, when you need them. Look for models that provide adequate lighting throughout the main compartment, from the top shelf to the crisper drawer, and are lit by LED bulbs. LED bulbs produce less heat than other types of lighting, reducing the likelihood of internal temperature fluctuations.
Exterior finish: A variety of different exterior finishes are available, making it easy to find a fridge model to suit your kitchen decor. Classic white steel and stainless steel finishes are among the most common thanks to their versatility, while retro colours, black steel and glass finishes have increased in popularity in recent years.
Energy rating: As your fridge typically runs all day, every day, it’s important to find a model that is energy efficient, helping to save you money in the long run. The amount of energy used by each fridge model will vary depending on their size and energy efficiency, but the star rating sticker on each will allow you to better compare similar models. As well as a star rating, most fridges also display the average annual energy consumption, which allows you to calculate the running costs based on the electricity rates in your location. Fridges that are more energy efficient may be more expensive to purchase, but the long term energy savings may be worth the initial investment.
Noise: For some people, the amount of noise generated by a fridge can be an important consideration. Most fridges operate at around 35 decibels, which is similar to the amount of sound made durings a whispered conversation. In general, fridges are quite quiet when in operation, but you may notice sounds from internal fans, compressors and the contraction or expansion of materials from time to time.
Child-proofing: If you have small children in your household, it’s a good idea to look for features that help to child-proof your fridge. If you’re thinking of purchasing a model with a water or ice dispenser, it’s important to check if it has child-proof settings, while lockable compartments help to ensure refrigerated medicines can be stored safely.
Smart features. Although not essential, smart features can help you to get more out of your fridge. Some models connect to WiFi, allowing you to see what’s in your fridge when doing your weekly grocery shop, while others allow you to view recipes and play music and videos at the touch of a button.
Water and ice dispensers. Most fridges with ice makers and water dispensers are connected to your home water supply. These features save you from having to open your fridge to access chilled water or ice. Additional costs are involved in having the fridge installed by a plumber and from the replacement of water filters over time. Non-plumbed models are also available.
Air deodorisers. Helping to keep your fridge smelling fresh, air deodorisers are another good feature to look out for when shopping for a new fridge.
