A fixed rangehood is a permanently extended unit that fits under a kitchen cabinet above your cooktop, always ready to use with no sliding or adjusting required. They offer a clean, consistent look in your kitchen and are available in ducted and recirculating versions. At Bing Lee we stock fixed rangehoods from brands including Westinghouse, Miele and Chef. Our FAQs below explain the key things to consider.

FAQs

1. How is a fixed rangehood different from a slide-out model?

Both sit under an overhead cabinet, but a slide-out rangehood has a section that extends out over the cooktop when in use and retracts when not needed. A fixed rangehood is always in the same position. The fixed model has a slightly cleaner, more permanent look since there are no moving parts, but a slide-out can sometimes provide better capture when extended since it gets physically closer to the cooking surface.

2. How do I choose the best fixed rangehood for my kitchen?

The width should match or exceed your cooktop. A 60cm rangehood suits a 60cm cooktop, while a 90cm model is better for a wider cooking surface. Check the extraction rate against the size of your kitchen - multiply your kitchen volume in cubic metres by 10 for a minimum guide. Also consider noise level. Rangehoods are rated in decibels (dB) and quieter models are worth paying for if your kitchen is open-plan. 3. Can a fixed rangehood be ducted outside?

Yes. Most fixed rangehoods can operate in ducted or recirculating mode. Ducted is more effective. The extracted air travels through a duct to the outside through a wall or ceiling, while recirculating filters the air through a carbon filter and returns it to the kitchen. Whether you can duct depends on your kitchen's layout and access to an external wall or ceiling.

4. What filters does a fixed rangehood use?

Fixed rangehoods use a metal mesh or baffle grease filter to trap grease from cooking vapour. These can be removed and cleaned in the dishwasher or by hand every one to three months. If the rangehood operates in recirculating mode, a carbon filter is also required to absorb odours. Carbon filters cannot be washed and need to be replaced every six to twelve months.

5. Are fixed rangehoods quieter than canopy models?

Noise levels vary between individual models more than between styles, but fixed undermount rangehoods can be quieter than large canopy hoods because the motor is enclosed within the cabinet. Always check the dB rating on the product specifications if noise is a concern - many models list separate noise levels for low and high speed settings.
