A canopy rangehood is a popular choice for open-plan kitchens because it makes a visual statement while doing a solid job of clearing steam, smoke and cooking smells from the air. Mounted to the wall or ceiling above your cooktop, the wide canopy captures vapour from a broad area. At Bing Lee we stock canopy rangehoods from brands including Westinghouse, Smeg, Fisher & Paykel and more. Our FAQs below cover the key things to know.

FAQs

1. What is a canopy rangehood?

A canopy rangehood is a type of kitchen ventilation that is mounted above your cooktop and features a wide, chimney-style hood visible from the kitchen. Unlike undermount or slide-out models that are hidden inside cabinetry, a canopy hood is a feature piece. It sits on the wall or hangs from the ceiling and draws cooking vapour up through a canopy into either a duct that vents outside, or a recirculating filter system.

2. What size canopy rangehood do I need?

A canopy rangehood should be at least as wide as your cooktop and ideally a little wider. A 60cm rangehood suits a 60cm cooktop, while a 90cm model is recommended for 75cm or 90cm cooktops. Wider coverage means better capture of steam and smoke, especially from the edges of your cooking surface. For island cooktops, an island or ceiling-mounted canopy designed specifically for central placement is the right choice.

3. How do I choose the best canopy rangehood for my kitchen?

Think about where the rangehood will be mounted (wall or ceiling), whether you can run a duct to the outside, and how powerful the extraction needs to be for your cooking style. A rough guide is to multiply your kitchen's volume in cubic metres by 10 to get the minimum extraction rate you need in m³/h. Also consider the noise level. Rangehoods are rated in decibels (dB), and quieter models are worth paying for if your kitchen is close to living areas. 4. Can a canopy rangehood recirculate air or does it have to be ducted outside?

Many canopy rangehoods can operate in either ducted or recirculating mode. Ducted mode vents air outside through a wall or ceiling duct and is the more effective option for removing heat, moisture and odours. Recirculating mode passes the air through a carbon filter to remove smells and then returns it to the kitchen, no external duct is needed. If you cannot run a duct, recirculating with a quality carbon filter is a practical alternative.

5. How often do I need to clean a canopy rangehood?

The mesh or baffle filters on a canopy rangehood should be cleaned every one to three months depending on how much you cook. Most are dishwasher safe, which makes cleaning easy. The interior of the canopy can be wiped down with a degreaser and a cloth. If your rangehood is recirculating, the carbon filters will also need to be replaced every six to twelve months as they cannot be washed and must be swapped out.
