A slide-out rangehood is a space-saving option that sits inside an overhead cabinet and pulls forward over your cooktop when you need it, then slides back out of sight when you are done. It is a great solution for kitchens where you want an effective rangehood without the visual presence of a canopy or wall-mounted model. At Bing Lee we stock slide-out rangehoods from brands including Miele, Bosch and Westinghouse. For more guidance on choosing the right rangehood, check out our rangehood buying guide with expert tips to help you compare models.
FAQs
1. What is a slide-out rangehood?
A slide-out rangehood (sometimes called a telescopic or pull-out rangehood) is a rangehood that is housed inside a kitchen cabinet above your cooktop. When you need it, a section of the unit slides out over the cooking area to capture steam, smoke and cooking smells. When you are finished, it retracts back into the cabinet, keeping your kitchen looking clean and uncluttered. The controls and filter are typically located on the base of the unit that extends out.
2. How is a slide-out rangehood different from an undermount model?
Both types are concealed in a cabinet above the cooktop. The key difference is that a slide-out rangehood extends forward over the cooking surface when in use, increasing the capture area and getting closer to the steam source. An undermount (or fixed) rangehood stays in a fixed position and captures from directly below the cabinet. The slide-out tends to be more effective at capturing cooking vapour because it can be positioned directly over the cooktop, while an undermount model relies on drawing air up from a fixed position.
3. Can a slide-out rangehood be ducted or recirculating?
Most slide-out rangehoods can operate in both modes. In ducted mode, the extracted air is channelled through internal ducting up and out through an external wall or ceiling vent. This is the most effective option. In recirculating mode, the air passes through a carbon filter to remove odours and is returned to the kitchen. No external duct is needed for recirculating, making it a suitable option for apartments or kitchens on internal walls.
4. Are slide-out rangehoods easy to clean?
Yes. The grease filter on a slide-out rangehood is usually a mesh or baffle filter that can be removed and cleaned in the dishwasher or washed by hand with hot soapy water. The underside of the extended panel can be wiped down with a degreasing cloth. If your model is recirculating, remember to replace the carbon filter every six to twelve months as it cannot be washed.
5. How much space does a slide-out rangehood need inside the cabinet?
The required cabinet depth and height will be specified in the product's installation guide. Typically, you need a cabinet depth of at least 45-50cm and sufficient height within the cabinet for the unit to sit. The rangehood is usually fixed to the cabinet floor and venting runs up through the cabinet and the wall. If you are fitting one into an existing kitchen, measure your cabinet carefully before purchasing.
