An undermount rangehood is the go-to choice for kitchens where a clean, minimal look is the priority. Installed inside a cabinet above your cooktop, the rangehood is hidden from view, you just see a neat extraction panel below the cupboard door. At Bing Lee we stock undermount rangehoods from brands including Bosch, Westinghouse, Miele and more. Our FAQs below explain how they work and how to pick the right one. For more guidance on choosing the right rangehood, check out our rangehood buying guide with expert tips to help you compare models.

FAQs

1. What is an undermount rangehood?

An undermount rangehood (also called a concealed or integrated rangehood) is a ventilation unit that sits inside an overhead kitchen cabinet, completely hidden from view when not in use. The visible part is just the base plate beneath the cabinet, which contains the filter, lights and controls. When you turn it on, the fan inside the cabinet above draws air up through the base plate and either vents it outside or recirculates it through a carbon filter. They offer a smooth look that suits minimalist or Scandi-style kitchens.

2. How is an undermount rangehood different from a slide-out model?

Both types are installed under a cabinet, but they work differently. An undermount model is always in position. The filter panel sits flush and stationary beneath the cupboard. A slide-out rangehood stays retracted inside the cabinet until you pull it forward over the cooktop, then slides back when not in use. The undermount style provides a cleaner look when closed since nothing protrudes, while a slide-out extends the capture area further over the cooktop when in use.

3. Can an undermount rangehood be ducted outside?

Yes. Most undermount rangehoods can operate in either ducted or recirculating mode. In ducted mode, the extracted air is channelled through a duct running inside or above the cabinet to an external vent in the wall or ceiling. This is more effective for removing heat and moisture. In recirculating mode, no external duct is needed. The air passes through carbon filters and is returned to the kitchen. Your ability to duct will depend on your kitchen's layout and whether there is a practical path for the ducting.

4. What type of filter does an undermount rangehood use?

Most undermount rangehoods use one or both of the following: a metal mesh or baffle grease filter, which traps airborne grease and can be removed and cleaned (usually in the dishwasher); and a carbon filter, which absorbs odours and is only required when the rangehood is operating in recirculating mode. The grease filter should be cleaned every one to three months. Carbon filters need to be replaced every six to twelve months as they cannot be washed.

5. Are undermount rangehoods quieter than canopy rangehoods?

They can be, because the motor and fan mechanism are enclosed within the cabinetry above, which helps to dampen some of the noise. However, the noise level varies between models, so always check the dB rating if a quiet kitchen is important to you. Some undermount models run very quietly at low speed and are only noticeable at higher extraction settings.
