FAQs
1. What is an island rangehood?
An island rangehood is a ventilation unit that suspends from the ceiling above a cooktop that sits away from the wall, typically on a kitchen island bench. Because there is no wall or cabinet to mount it to, it needs to be ceiling-mounted and connected to ducting that runs through the ceiling to an external vent. Visually, island rangehoods tend to be a feature piece in the kitchen, so most models are designed with looks in mind as well as performance.
2. What size island rangehood do I need?
Your island rangehood should be at least as wide as your cooktop, and ideally 10-15cm wider on each side for the best extraction coverage. For a standard 60cm cooktop, a 60-75cm rangehood is usually sufficient. If you have a wider 90cm cooktop, look for a 90cm or larger model. Always check the product specifications for the recommended cooktop width range, as these vary between models.
3. Does an island rangehood need to be ducted?
In most cases, yes. Island rangehoods are almost always ducted, meaning the extracted air is expelled outside through a duct in the ceiling. This is more effective than recirculating because it completely removes heat, moisture and odours from your kitchen. Some models can be configured to recirculate using carbon filters if ducting is not possible, but this is less common for island installations and less effective in practice. If you are building or renovating, plan the ducting path early so it can be incorporated into the ceiling structure.
4. How high should an island rangehood be mounted above the cooktop?
The standard installation height is 65-75cm above a gas cooktop and 60-70cm above an electric or induction cooktop, measured from the cooking surface to the base of the rangehood. Mounting it too high reduces how effectively it captures steam and smoke, & too low risks heat damage to the unit. Always check the installation guide for your specific model, as the recommended height can vary between brands.
5. How do I clean an island rangehood?
The grease filters should be removed and cleaned every one to three months depending on how often you cook. Most are dishwasher safe, which makes the job easy. The exterior surfaces can be wiped down with a damp cloth and a mild degreaser. If your model recirculates air, the carbon filters also need to be replaced every six to twelve months as they cannot be washed.
