FAQs
1. What is an alfresco rangehood?
An alfresco rangehood (also called an outdoor rangehood or BBQ rangehood) is a ventilation unit specifically designed and rated for outdoor installation. Unlike standard indoor rangehoods, alfresco models are built to withstand moisture, temperature fluctuations and outdoor conditions. They are designed to be installed in covered alfresco areas, pergolas and outdoor kitchen setups above a BBQ or outdoor cooktop, where they remove smoke, grease and cooking odours from the space.
2. Can I use an indoor rangehood in my alfresco area?
No. Standard indoor rangehoods are not rated for outdoor use and will be damaged by moisture, humidity and temperature extremes over time. An outdoor or alfresco-rated rangehood is built with weatherproof materials, sealed controls and electrical components that meet the relevant Australian standards for outdoor installation. Always use a product specifically rated for outdoor use in an alfresco setting.
3. How do I choose the best alfresco rangehood for my outdoor kitchen?
Match the width of the rangehood to your BBQ or outdoor cooktop - ideally go a little wider for better smoke capture. Extraction power is particularly important for outdoor cooking, where strong odours and heavy smoke from a BBQ need to be removed quickly. Also consider whether the covered area is fully enclosed or open on the sides, as a more enclosed space requires more extraction power. Sirius offers models in 90cm, 120cm and 150cm widths to suit different outdoor kitchen configurations.
4. Do alfresco rangehoods need to vent outside?
Not necessarily. Some alfresco rangehoods can operate in recirculating mode using carbon filters, while others duct to the outside. In a fully open or partially open alfresco area, recirculating may be acceptable. In a more enclosed covered pergola or pavilion where smoke can accumulate, ducting outside is the more effective solution. Ducting can run through the ceiling structure or out the back wall of the alfresco area. Check the product's installation options and your space layout to determine what works best.
5. What size alfresco rangehood do I need for my BBQ?
Match the rangehood to the width of your BBQ or wider. A 90cm model suits a standard 60-75cm BBQ, while a 120cm or 150cm model is better for larger built-in BBQs or those used in fully enclosed alfresco kitchens where more extraction power is needed. Think about the size and volume of your covered area too - a larger space with higher ceilings will need a more powerful unit to keep the air clear during a big cook.
