Our FAQs below cover what you need to know before investing in a built-in BBQ.
FAQs
1. What are the advantages of a built-in BBQ over a freestanding model?
Built-in BBQs create a permanent, polished outdoor kitchen aesthetic. They are fixed in place and typically connected to a natural gas line, so you never need to worry about running out of gas during a cook. The installation usually includes bench space on either side for food preparation, which freestanding trolley models do not always provide. Built-in BBQs are a better investment for those who entertain regularly and want an outdoor cooking area that looks and functions like a proper kitchen.
2. How do I choose the best built-in BBQ for my outdoor area?
First, confirm the dimensions of your outdoor kitchen bench opening, as these need to match the model's required cut-out size. Decide if you want natural gas connected to the mains, or LPG via a concealed bottle in the cabinetry below. Think about the number of burners you need, whether you want a hooded BBQ for roasting, and what cooking surface configuration suits your style of cooking. 3. Does a built-in BBQ need to be connected to natural gas?
Not necessarily. Built-in BBQs can run on either natural gas or LPG. If your outdoor kitchen has access to the mains gas supply, natural gas is the most convenient option since you never run out. If not, an LPG bottle can be stored in the cabinetry below the bench. The conversion between natural gas and LPG is usually possible using a conversion kit installed by a licensed gas fitter.
4. What outdoor kitchen bench material should I use around a built-in BBQ?
The bench framing and cabinetry around a built-in BBQ needs to be built from materials that can handle heat, moisture and outdoor conditions. Stainless steel is the most popular choice for outdoor kitchen cabinetry as it is weatherproof, easy to clean and does not warp. Concrete and stone benchtops work well as they are heat-resistant and extremely durable. Avoid timber or MDF cabinetry for the section directly adjacent to the BBQ, as these are not suited to outdoor heat and moisture exposure.
5. Do built-in BBQs require a rangehood?
A dedicated outdoor alfresco rangehood is not always required for an open outdoor kitchen, but if your built-in BBQ is in a covered alfresco area or pergola with limited airflow, an alfresco rangehood significantly improves the cooking experience by removing smoke and cooking odours. Sirius and other brands offer alfresco-rated rangehoods specifically designed for outdoor use. Standard indoor rangehoods are not rated for outdoor installation.
