Spring Cleaning Checklist: Tips, Tricks & Advice for a Spotless Home This Season

Spring is almost here, and for many, that means it’s time to reset, refresh, and reorganise. Not sure where to start? In today’s article, we share all our spring cleaning ideas and a comprehensive checklist to make your home shine for the year ahead.

The definition of spring cleaning is quite simple: it’s the process of deep cleaning your home in springtime. Though it can take a few days and seem like a mammoth task, spring cleaning has many benefits, from reducing stress levels to improving focus, improving air quality and minimising home hazards. Plus, it gets you moving – and we dare say it counts as a mini-workout!

As the name suggests, house spring cleaning is typically undertaken in spring, which, in Australia, is from September to November.

Spring cleaning includes every room in your home, particularly those spots that you typically skip during your regular weekly cleaning. Think of the area behind the TV stand or that kitchen drawer where you’ve accumulated all kinds of miscellaneous items.

Spring cleaning your home can be a time-consuming and thorough process (hence why it is done only once a year), but by the end, each room should look spotless, as if you had just moved in that day.

  • Clean stove top - use a soft cloth to not scratch it

  • Deep clean the fridge, freezer and pantry:

    • Pull everything out

  • Wash your bedsheets in your washing machine and remake your bed with fresh bed linen.

The checklist above is lengthy, which might make the idea of spring cleaning a little overwhelming. Thankfully, there are things you can do to make the process easier:

  • Make a schedule and prioritise. Focusing on one room at a time is much more efficient than spending 5 minutes here and 5 minutes there.

  • Listen to your favourite album, podcast or audiobook as you clean – it will help make time go by faster.

  • Take this time to declutter. Clean home, clear mind – need we say more? Get rid of any items that are no longer functional, and donate any you don’t use anymore.

  • Get the whole family involved. It will lighten the load for adults and teach kids how to be responsible for their space.

  • Reward yourself. Whether it’s dinner at your favourite restaurant or a relaxing bath in your sparkling clean bathroom, having something to look forward to will motivate you to get things done.

Q: Why is it called spring cleaning?

In spring, the weather starts to warm up, making it the perfect time to open the windows and comfortably let fresh air (and sunlight) in as you clean away. It’s not too cold or hot – just right for a home reset.

Q: How long does spring cleaning take?

This will depend on how big or small your home is. A 2-bedroom apartment could take 2-3 days, whereas a 4-bedroom house could take up to 5 days.

Q: What cleaning supplies do you need?

Once again, it depends. But a few essentials include microfibre cloths, all-purpose spray, a duster, dish soap, a vacuum, a mop and garbage bags.
