Types of TVs

Not all TVs are built the same. Understanding the different types available will help you choose the right screen for your room, your budget, and how you watch. Here's a breakdown of the main TV types at Bing Lee:

Smart TVs - The most popular type of TV in Australia. Connects to your home Wi-Fi and gives you instant access to Netflix, Disney+, Stan, YouTube and free-to-air catch-up apps without needing any extra devices. All major brands including Samsung, LG, Sony, Hisense, and TCL offer smart TV ranges at Bing Lee.

OLED TVs - OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) TVs offer the best picture quality money can buy. Each pixel generates its own light and can switch off completely, delivering perfect blacks, infinite contrast and exceptional viewing angles.

QLED TVs - Samsung's premium display technology. A quantum dot layer enhances the LED backlight to produce significantly brighter, more vibrant colours - ideal for well-lit living rooms.

Mini-LED TVs - Use thousands of smaller LEDs for more precise local dimming, better contrast and improved brightness.

4K TVs - 4K Ultra HD is the standard resolution for most new TVs, delivering four times the detail of Full HD. The minimum resolution we'd recommend for any new TV purchase.

8K TVs - The next frontier in resolution. Best suited to very large screens (75 inches and above) for buyers who want to future-proof their setup

LED/LCD TVs - The most affordable and widely available panel type. Great brightness, a wide range of sizes, and strong value for money.

Lifestyle TVs - TVs designed to blend into your home when not in use. Samsung's The Frame displays artwork instead of a black screen, while other lifestyle models are built into mirrors or designed for outdoor use

65 inch - Best for main living areas where you want a truly immersive experience. Viewing distance: 2.4–4m

75–83 inch - Best for large open-plan spaces and dedicated TV rooms

What is HDR?

HDR (High Dynamic Range) is one of the most impactful picture quality features on modern TVs. It expands the range of brightness and colour a TV can display — producing brighter highlights, deeper shadows, and more lifelike colour than standard content. Most 4K TVs now support HDR, and the majority of streaming content on Netflix, Disney+, and Stan is available in HDR. The main formats to know:

HDR10 - The base standard, supported by all HDR TVs. Dolby Vision - A premium dynamic format found on LG, Sony, and select other brands. Adjusts the picture scene by scene for the best possible result.

HDR10+ - Samsung's alternative to Dolby Vision, with dynamic tone mapping.

For most buyers, HDR10 support is a meaningful upgrade over older TVs. If you're buying a premium model, look for Dolby Vision or HDR10+ for the best HDR experience.

TV Refresh Rate Explained

Refresh rate is how many times per second a TV updates the image on screen, measured in Hertz (Hz). A higher refresh rate means smoother, more fluid motion.

60Hz - Standard refresh rate, fine for general TV watching and streaming.

100Hz / 120Hz - Noticeably better for fast-moving content like live sport, action films, and gaming.

144Hz - Found on premium gaming TVs, ideal for PS5 and Xbox Series X at high frame rates.

If you mainly stream shows and movies, 60Hz is adequate. If you watch a lot of live sport or plan to use your TV for gaming, 100Hz or 120Hz will make a real difference.

Complete Your TV Setup

Soundbars & Home Theatre - Significantly better audio than built-in TV speakers. Most new TVs support HDMI eARC for a single-cable connection

Wall Mounts & Stands - Most TVs are VESA compatible. Choose from fixed, tilting, or full-motion wall brackets, or a TV stand or cabinet

Smart Projectors - 100 inches and above. Best for darkened rooms or outdoor setups

Players & Recorders - Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players for physical media collections
