FAQs
1. What is a rangehood carbon filter and when do I need to replace it?
A carbon (charcoal) filter is used in recirculating rangehoods to absorb cooking odours from the air before it is returned to the kitchen. Unlike grease filters, carbon filters cannot be washed, they need to be replaced entirely. Most manufacturers recommend replacing them every six to twelve months depending on how often you cook. If your rangehood is no longer removing smells effectively, a new carbon filter is usually the first thing to try.
2. How do I choose the right replacement filter for my rangehood?
Check the model number of your rangehood and match it to the compatible filter listed in the product accessories or in the rangehood's manual. Using the correct filter size and type ensures a proper fit and full extraction performance. If you cannot find your model number, the filter dimensions (length, width and type - mesh, baffle or carbon) are also a reliable way to find a compatible replacement.
3. What rangehood ducting do I need for a new installation?
Ducting size and type depends on your rangehood's outlet diameter and the path the duct needs to take through your kitchen to reach an external vent. Most residential rangehoods use 125mm or 150mm round ducting. If the duct needs to turn corners or run through tight spaces, flexible ducting is useful, though rigid ducting with elbows provides less resistance and better airflow. A duct cover (also called an external wall cap or exhaust grille) is needed at the exit point to keep insects and weather out.
4. Can I install rangehood accessories myself?
Replacing filters is a simple DIY job and requires no tools in most cases. Installing ducting is more involved but manageable for a competent DIYer if no new electrical wiring is required. Any work that involves connecting or modifying the rangehood's electrical wiring must be done by a licensed electrician. If you are cutting through an exterior wall for new ducting, it is worth engaging a tradesperson to ensure the wall is not structural and the cut is weatherproofed correctly.
5. How often should I clean my rangehood grease filter?
Grease filters should be cleaned every one to three months depending on how much and how intensely you cook. A rangehood used daily for cooking with oils and strong heat will need more frequent cleaning than one used occasionally. Most mesh and baffle grease filters are dishwasher safe, which makes the process easy. A clogged grease filter restricts airflow and reduces the rangehood's effectiveness significantly.
