A gas BBQ is the most popular choice for Australian backyards, and for good reason. They heat up quickly, are easy to control and give you the flexibility to grill, roast and even bake under the hood. At Bing Lee we stock gas BBQs from brands including Beefeater, Everdure, Crossray and Sirius in configurations ranging from compact two-burner models up to large six-burner setups. Our FAQs below cover everything you need to know.

FAQs

1. What is the difference between LPG and natural gas for a BBQ?

LPG comes from bottles that you attach directly to the BBQ. It's convenient but requires replacing or refilling bottles when they run out. Natural gas connects via a fixed line to your home's gas supply, so you effectively never run out mid-cook. Natural gas BBQs need to be fitted to a fixed connection by a licensed gas fitter, while LPG models are portable and can be moved around the yard. Most gas BBQs are sold LPG-ready, with some models available as natural gas versions or with a conversion kit.

2. How do I choose the best gas BBQ for my outdoor space?

Start with the number of burners. Two or three burners suit a smaller household or apartment balcony well. Four burners give you a good cooking area for regular family meals. Five or six burners are for those who entertain often or want maximum cooking flexibility. Also consider whether you want a hooded BBQ, which allows you to roast and bake as well as grill. Think about where it will live. A fixed natural gas connection is great for a permanent deck, while an LPG model works better if you want flexibility. 3. What should I look for in the cooking grills and hotplate?

Cast iron cooking grills hold heat well and give great sear marks, but they require some oiling and maintenance to prevent rust. Stainless steel grills are easier to maintain but do not retain heat as well. A hotplate is a very useful addition for cooking things like eggs, bacon, onions and fish that would fall through standard grills. Many BBQs come with a combination of grills on one side and a hotplate on the other.

4. How many burners do I need in a gas BBQ?

Two to three burners suit a couple or small family cooking straightforward weeknight meals. Four burners is the most popular configuration and covers most households well. You can cook different foods at different temperatures across the grill area. Five or six burners are ideal for households that regularly cook for large groups, as the extra surface area and heat zones give you much more flexibility. A side burner is worth having if you like to warm sauces or sides while the main cook is on the grill.

5. How do I maintain and clean a gas BBQ?

After each cook, turn the burners to high for a few minutes with the hood closed to burn off any food residue, then use a wire brush to scrub the grills clean while they are still hot. Allow the BBQ to cool before wiping down the outside with a damp cloth. The grease tray should be emptied and cleaned regularly to prevent flare-ups. At least once a year, remove the grills and hotplates and clean the burner heads and venturis to ensure they are free of blockages.
